Since the first palace and park complexes were built at the beginning of the 18th century, Ettersburg was a popular hunting and summer residence for the ducal family of Saxony-Weimar and Eisenach. The Buchenwalder Memorial, which can be seen from afar, is the burial place of thousands of concentration camp prisoners. The entrance through the large entrance tour leads into what is now the largest monument commemorating a National Socialist concentration camp in Europe. The monumental complex was built in 1958 on the south side of the Ettersberg as a national monument of the GDR.

Above this gate is written "To each his own". This is the entrance.
