A beautiful heath landscape

Lüneburg Heath, a picturesque landscape in the triangle of cities between Hamburg, Bremen, and Hanover, stretches from the Elbe River in the northeast to the Aller River in the southwest and is characterized by its purple flowering plants, which give the region its name. The heath, which means "desert plateau," stands out impressively from the damp lowlands. This unique heath landscape was formed by Ice Age glaciers and features rolling hills here and there, including the Wilseder Berg, the highest point at almost 170 meters. Although the landscape has existed for thousands of years, human cultivation has transformed it into the sea of flowers and grazing land for the characteristic Heidschnucke sheep we know today.

Beautiful heathland in August! When the heather blooms, you'll experience a breathtaking sea of purple blossoms from the valley edges, causing the valley to overflow. Totengrund, an impressive 30-hectare valley basin, can only be explored via marked trails. However, there are scenic hiking trails that lead along the upper edge and offer you special views of the valley. Cycling around Totengrund? Only for safe cyclists.
