This was once the coal port of the Min. Achenbach colliery. The coal was transported by colliery railway from Brambauer to the port on the Dortmund-Ems Canal and loaded there onto canal barges. Unfortunately, the loading crane and the harbor master's buildings have been demolished. The railway line continued towards Dortmund-Mengede station via the bridge to the north. Unfortunately, there is no cycle path there yet. The bridge and railway line are closed.

🌊🌿🦆The observation tower: On the north side (Damaschkestraße, Castrop-Rauxel) stands the Mengede retention basin observation tower. It offers a 360-degree view over the Emscher floodplains, the adjacent coal mines, and far into the Ruhr region.

🌿🦆🚲 An impressive example of the ecological transformation of the Ruhr area! The Emscher floodplains on the border between Dortmund-Mengede and Castrop-Rauxel offer a unique mix of modern flood protection and renaturalized river landscape on the northern side.

The stormwater retention basin and the Emscher meadows are wonderful for both humans and animals. There's always plenty of birdwatching to be seen there, and the trails are perfect for cycling and hiking. (Currently limited, as the stormwater retention basin and the riverbank are being rebuilt.)
