Hard to believe: Lake Cossi originated from a dusty coal mine. By 1990, 87 million tons of lignite had been mined, and only after massive public demand was the open-cast mine shut down. Flooding began in 1993 with groundwater and water from neighboring open-cast mines. By 2000, the surrounding area had been developed as a local recreation area. Today, Lake Cospuden is part of the southern New Lake District.
