In 1956, the ferry dock was completely destroyed by ice drift during the cold winter. After the severe storm surge of 1962, the dike in Eckwarderhörne was raised. Unfortunately, the "Haus Spreen" with its train station and restaurant, numerous residential buildings, and the ferry dock had to be demolished. All that remains is the substructure, which still stands today and is often photographed by photographers.

Varel Harbor is located on the southern Jade Bay. The fairway leads from the German Bight across the Inner Jade and through the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park to the Varel Deep. This channel is marked with "Pricken" (prickles) and is only navigable at appropriate water levels.

Its floor plan forms a cross aligned with the four cardinal directions (cloister). The bronze bell (The Frisian Woman) in the center begins to ring during hurricane-force winds, warning people of the storm and the sea—as it has done for centuries.
