Schenkenau was first mentioned in 1286 as the ancestral seat of the von Rotenhan family. The medieval fortress on the Erfurt-Nuremberg trade route was destroyed except for the ground floor during the Peasants' War of 1525, but was subsequently rebuilt as a Ganerbenburg (Ganerbenburg). After 1437, the castle changed hands several times. Since 1960, Schenkenau has been owned by the Treiber family, who began generating electricity in 1961 and offered farm holidays since 1973. https://die-schenkenau.de/

The "Milan" circular hiking trail from Untermerzbach leads to the Unterer Berg. The lookout point features a seating area and offers a sweeping view of the so-called "Garden of God" from Staffelberg to Banz Monastery.
