The bridge over the A9 near the Nuremberg-East interchange is a resource-efficient landmark with a contemporary design. Detailed calculations and an optimized assembly concept enabled the bridge to be built economically. Bernhard Hauke spoke with bridge engineer Daniel Schäfer. The client envisioned a bridge as a symbolic gateway to the Nuremberg region. How did this sculptural approach influence the bridge designs? The initial idea was to use an arch structure for the bridge, reminiscent of a gateway. As the requirements evolved, we determined that a self-tensioning arch was the best solution. At the same time, I wanted the bridge to demonstrate that bridge construction can combine symbolic power, modern design, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Therefore, we opted for a network arch and slender, clearly defined steel box sections. It was important to us that the bridge looked good from every angle.
