Duke Friedrich Wilhelm of Saxe-Altenburg built the present-day Old Palace between 1668 and 1670, which gradually developed into a hunting and summer residence. In addition to the high nobility of the time, the Russian Tsar Nicholas II and the German Emperor Wilhelm II also hunted here. The new hunting and residential palace was built between 1880 and 1885 by the Berlin architects Ernst von Ihne and Paul Stegmüller.

This castle is a little insider tip 👌 I also recommend a visit from the inside, the museum has been lovingly restored and the castle café rounds off the visit perfectly.😉 The entrance fee is there to restore and preserve the castle, which is something we like to do to preserve the culture.

Between 1548 and 1550, Elector Johann Friedrich the Magnanimous had the beautiful Jadgschloss built on a small island. Today you will find a cozy café and a museum here and you can also take part in castle tours. You can find more information about prices and opening times here: https://www.schlosswolfersdorf.de.

First mentioned in outline in 1494 as an electoral hunting lodge (with origins in the 13th century); Built in its current form from 1664 by Duke Friedrich Wilhelm II of Saxe-Altenburg, it was rebuilt and expanded several times until the 19th century; Together with the Kavaliershaus (1856), the tea house (1862) and the arcade (1900), it forms an overall ensemble on the southern edge of the castle park not far from the Johanneskirche; after an interim use from 1918, among other things. As a Reich farming school, tuberculosis, recovery, after-work and nursing home, age-appropriate apartments have been rented out in the Old Castle since 2012;

The Roda Monastery was a Cistercian monastery in Stadtroda (Thuringia). It was founded between 1228 and 1247 as a private monastery for the Lobdeburgers and also served as their burial place. After the introduction of the Reformation in 1534, it was abolished. The monastery church was built in the Gothic style in the mid-13th century. It bears clear stylistic traits of the Hirsau and Maulbronn reforms. Since it was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War in 1638, the church has fallen into ruin. Today, the red sandstone church is one of the largest monastery ruins in Thuringia. (Source: Wikipedia)

The transformation has begun. The barracks are to be demolished and the permanent buildings of the youth work yard are to remain standing. The castle has now been prepared to such an extent that no more windows are broken. Castle tours are possible and can be booked via the app.

If you're ever in Hummelshain, you should also see the old castle, at least from the outside!

Here you can get an idea of what the whole area, including the hunting lodge, could look like if everything was restored just as beautifully as the old castle. But that will still take years - and swallow up millions of euros... One can only hope that it will succeed.

Crazy! I've driven through Hummelshain hundreds of times over the past few decades - and only now have I visited the hunting lodge... A dream!! However, it must be said that humanity can destroy even without war! Ignorance and stupidity during the GDR era and wrong decisions after reunification have led to the catastrophic condition of this unique building and its entire surroundings. One can only hope that the association succeeds in saving this gem. The roofs are currently being renovated to prevent more moisture from entering the building. And the chaos with the barracks in the surrounding area is also supposed to be addressed.
