Ostfriesland-Equator" was determined in 1974 by the land register office in Aurich. The whole thing is apparently a tourist gag, presumably at the instigation of the city of Aurich, on whose territory the spot on the East Friesland hiking trail is located. Those who cycle along the Ostfriesland hiking trail from Aurich in the direction of the coast supposedly cross the Ostfriesland equator between Sandhorst and Plaggenburg. A plaque attached to the archway explains that Ostfriesland is between the 53rd and 54th degrees north latitude.

There are no specific opening times as the bathing lake is freely accessible.
