8월 8, 2024, Hötensleben Border Memorial

Here the past is real. Strangely enough, the ferry tower, the only house in Hötensleben that stood in the west, has not survived the times.

The Hötensleben border memorial is a monument that commemorates the time of German division. It includes an original section of the GDR border fortifications in Hötensleben in Saxony-Anhalt and is part of the European cultural heritage.

Here you can see 👀 how the border barriers were built and how they separated people in the East and West. You could only get through here at the risk of your life. That's why it's so interesting to see what states do to protect their ideology. Highly recommended!

In Hötensleben there is part of the former border system in its original condition from 1989. Over a length of 350m and an area of 6.5ha there are, among other things, a blind wall, signal fence, field of vision and firing with light line, patrol path and vehicle obstacle, border wall and the Guide tower with motor vehicle position has been preserved. The course of the barrier at this point is also impressive because it was set up directly behind the houses in the village.

You have to thank the people of Hötersleben for enduring this memorial in front of their windows, so that we too can get an impression of the madness that has caused so much suffering... here you can almost imagine how it spread through the whole country .

Here the border history has been very well preserved. It still shudders today when you see it and imagine how it was! Very interesting and instructive set up and described.

The Elmsburg circular route gives a lot of information about the castle 🏰. The floor plan of the church is beautiful 💒 which has an altar and an organ (only hinted at). By the way: you can also play on the organ!

An outstanding hiking destination to admire cultural monuments in the Elm. The Elmsburg is nicely described in the signs. You can also take a look at the floor plan of the church ⛪️ and play on the altar and the “organ” yourself! 👍

The dilapidated barbecue hut, a steep staircase leading into the valley basin, and a concrete barbecue stone once ruined the landscape. Action was also needed from a nature conservation perspective: The Karl May Valley had to be recreated! Together with Stefan Herzog, the forester responsible for the Braunschweig Cultural Heritage Foundation, the renovation was planned primarily with landscape conservation in mind. Two gatekeepers stand at the entrance to the path, which initially leads to a small hut on the edge of the valley basin. Instead of the steep staircase, a well-maintained path now leads down to the valley floor. Here stands another, slightly larger hut. These huts now serve as rest stops and shelters for hikers on their way through the Elm River from, for example, Esbeck, Schöningen, or the Elm House. The entrance to the stone labyrinth made of Elm limestone is marked by a gate made of mighty trunks. The labyrinth contains a puzzle that awaits solving. A barbecue grill is installed on a large boulder, reminiscent of the campfires and shared nights spent by our early ancestors 300,000 years ago. The huts in the Karl May Valley are made of solid wood and their design is reminiscent of the spears in the paleon. The fact that this project was even possible is thanks to the Ostfalen Citizens' Foundation and numerous donors who supported the renovation of the Karl May Valley. The official inauguration of the Karl May Valley took place at the opening of the 2019 hiking season in April. Anyone wishing to use the barbecue huts in the Karl May Valley must register with the town of Schöningen. Registration should be made at least two weeks in advance. A well-restored castle, depicted in its foundations. This part of the building was the chapel, with a suggested altar and organ—which can even be played— Greatly done!

Where can you find such a stone of this size that was left behind by the Ice Age?
