Part of the fortifications have been restored here and the tower can be climbed. Nice view of the Oker from here.

In the first half of the 10th century it was one of the largest complexes in northern Germany with a core castle and it was primarily intended to ward off further Hungarian invasions until Otto succeeded in 955 in Lechfeld near Augsburg in finally defeating the Hungarians. It was also an important military base for the Ottonian royal family in the northern Harz foothills.

a wonderfully presented area of the old imperial palace / Werlaburg. The site is relatively large and has numerous information boards on the history of the castle and the earth. A visit is worthwhile, but you should plan a little time, because the history is very extensive.
