Great route with varied nature all around. However, there are also many roads and hills where you have to constantly slow down, but if you just want to go on a nice tour and not drive at speed, the route is ideal. Many sections have been newly asphalted.

Beautiful old town, right on the Elbe

The white Dutch windmill of Artlenburg stands at the mouth of the Elbe Lateral Canal into the Elbe. With its four wings it sits enthroned on a base made of red bricks. The first windmill had existed there since 1833, but it burned down 56 years later when the brakes overheated in a storm. However, the operators didn't give up and built today's mill using parts of a water pumping mill. Since the wind alone proved to be insufficient for the grinding operation, the mill had been running with the support of an electric motor since 1932 and was later converted entirely to electricity. Grain was regularly ground there until 1993, but Artlenburg's former landmark was rapidly falling into disrepair. A windmill association has been taking care of the preservation of the historic building since 1996. He collected the equivalent of around 150,000 euros, which went into the renovation of the Galerie-Holländer. In 1999 the windmill was fully functional again. The association now organizes a mill festival every year on Thanksgiving Sunday, invites you to Mill Day on Whit Monday and offers guided tours by arrangement.
