During the great earthquake of 1956, the neighboring church of Ágios Georgios was almost completely destroyed. It was rebuilt and completely restored in 1966/67. This was made possible by the generosity of a shipowner, Mr. Loukas Nomikos, which is why a bust of this generous donor was erected in the courtyard of the church.

This Greek Orthodox church is dedicated to the most famous George: the dragon slayer. This church was built in the early 19th century. The church was almost completely destroyed in the great earthquake of 1956. It was rebuilt and completely restored in 1966/67. The beautiful church of Agios Ioannis Theologos, overlooking the Aegean Sea, the volcano and the caldera, was built between 1537 and 1650 and is characterized by its unique architecture. The church's location guarantees stunning views to anyone who visits, and the style of the church, with its crimson details, offers a sight very different from the typical blue-domed ecclesiastical monuments of Santorini.

Challenging ascent and descent with approx. 530 steps between Thira and the old harbor. Can be done without any problems if you are in good condition. There is no shade on the way. The biggest challenge, however, is the remains of the poor mules that have to transport tourists along this route. It's unbelievable that people happily spend money on this animal cruelty instead of traveling with their own feet (or the cable car).

The Church of Saint George in Perivolas (also known as the Church of Apanomeritis) is one of the most famous churches in Oia. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century. The church was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1956 (elements of the interior have been preserved - including iconostasis, paintings, icons). In 1966-1967 it was rebuilt thanks to the efforts of Loukas Nomikos, a descendant of the family that built the original church. The monument with his bust is currently in the church courtyard.
