    Perched on the northwestern edge of Santorini, Skaros Rock was once home to a medieval fortress that protected the island from pirates. It now stands as a mesmerising ruin overlooking the Aegean Sea.

    The site offers a unique geological display of volcanic formations and ancient buildings carved into the rocky landscape.

    Skaros was the capital of Santorini until the 18th century, when the town of Fira took its place.

    The ruins are a great place to explore and watch the sun set over the sea.

          The path to the rock is worth it. Impressive views and wonderful peace. In the past, Skaros had a fortress at the top and served as a watchtower. According to historical data, the fortress was not conquered due to its height and difficult access from the sea. A strong earthquake in the mid-20th century destroyed everything on Skaros and today the only building you can see there is the small church of Theοskеpasti.

              The hike - recommended in the early morning or towards the evening - is very traditional over lava mountains - up and down. Past many hotels and restaurants and then again very lonely over the heights. Good footwear is essential because of the sharp-edged lava rocks and rubble.
