7월 24, 2025, Burgruine Altenstein

The castle, towering 150 meters above the Weisach Valley, is a widely visible symbol of power and history. First documented in 1126, it served as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Stein for centuries. In 1895, it passed to the Barons of Rotenhan and finally to the Haßberge district in 1972. Noteworthy are the mighty double-towered gate and the picturesque remains of the late Gothic chapel. Source and further information: https://www.maroldsweisach.de/burgruine-altenstein

On the path leading up to Heldburg Fortress in Thuringia, you'll eventually come across a linden tree split in two. A sign is attached to the hollow of this tree, and I'd like to tell you about it now: "Castle Linden of Heldburg Fortress – Large-leaved Summer Linden. Wanderer, pause! Read my story here: In 1791, I was planted by the then Ducal Court Secretary, Johann Daniel Bechmann (1768-1826), from Heldburg. That's why I was also called the Bechmann Linden. Around 1960, lightning destroyed my beautiful crown and split the trunk. Duke George II of Saxe-Meiningen (1826-1914) and his wife, Baroness von Heldburg (1839-1923), often lingered in the shade of its spreading branches when they resided here at the fortress during the summer months." The Helene castle restaurant has now opened and welcomes its guests. From the terrace you have a great view of the Gleichbergen, the Straufhain and the Henneberger Warte near Bad Rodach. The pictures were taken from the terrace around the new building. It's open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., good to know.

Brennhausen Castle is located about four kilometers west of Sulzdorf on the Lederhecke in the Rhön-Grabfeld district in Lower Franconia. The well-preserved moated castle is still inhabited and can only be viewed from the outside. Source: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Brennhausen

Memories of bygone times - the artificial ruins of the medieval style have always been part of the compulsory program of the English landscape garden. First and foremost, it fulfills the function of being a trigger for emotions: it is intended to remind of past, supposedly better times and to evoke a feeling of regret and melancholy. In this specific case, it is assumed that the outer bailey gate of the old Bettenenburg was moved here and rebuilt, especially since there is no Bettenburg. The Altenburg was deliberately built within sight of the Bettenenburg in order to emphasize the contrast between the supposedly old and the new. This visual contrast can still be seen today in late autumn and winter (Information Hassberge Tourismus)

A new catering building was built on the terrace of the German Castle Museum in cooperation between the city of Heldburg as the client and the Thuringian Castles and Gardens Foundation. The guest room and terrace will offer space for events, celebrations and for relaxing in the historical ambience. You could already get a first impression on the day of the open monument.

A great destination for young and old, and definitely suitable for children with a sense of adventure. The neighboring Lichtenstein Castle is easy to reach by bike via a great forest path. Lichtenstein and Altenstein are historically connected. You can find out more about this on the Internet: The castle was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Stein zu Altenstein. The Steins split into two lines around 1200. The Steins of Lichtenstein were based at Lichtenstein Castle, which is located about five kilometers south on the same ridge. The church opposite is also worth seeing; you shouldn't save the short walk.

The Veste is always worth a visit. The German Castle Museum alone is an attraction enough, as is the romantic complex. There is a lot to discover all around, a detour into the city is also worthwhile.
