The Liebenstein castle ruins tower high above the city. Currently closed for renovation work.

Once you have climbed the Pleß you will be rewarded with a great view. There is a playground for the little ones and plenty of seating for the adults to relax. The hiking hut is open on weekends and public holidays in the afternoons. 👍🏻

The castle was probably built in the High Middle Ages by the Lords of Frankenstein, who resided near Bad Salzungen, as an outpost. After it passed to the Wettin dynasty, the Lords vom Stein zu Altenstein received the castle as a fief and rebuilt it. Hermann vom Stein oversaw its expansion in the Renaissance style around 1599. Around 1800, under the influence of Romanticism, efforts began to restore the now ruined complex. The Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen appreciated its appearance within sight of the landscaped park surrounding their summer residence, Altenstein Castle. One of the many eye-catchers in the Altenstein Landscape Park. It is also fun for children to climb these rock steps to the house and enjoy the wonderful view from there.

A very beautiful castle, with a beautiful view. The visit is free of charge, but you are welcome to leave a donation at the entrance to the tower.

Great rest area with refuge, information boards and atonement cross. The rest area also offers a beautiful view towards Wartburg.

Nice place and great view

The ruins of Bad Liebenstein consist of a core castle and a lower bailey in the south. The main castle was built on two reef limestone massifs separated by a fissure-like chasm, with the western part being 3-4 m higher. A wall and ditch system runs around the castle and runs out to the west. The documented sources for the castle ruins start with 1353 quite late. From the 17th century the castle gradually fell into disrepair. In the fall of 2002, dated Thuringian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archeology on behalf of the Thuringian Castles and Gardens Foundation Examination carried out.
