On May 27, 1906, an observation tower was inaugurated on the summit in honor of Duchess Alexandrine (1820–1904), wife of Duke Ernst II of Coburg.[3][4] The Alexandrine Tower, designed by Max Böhme, fell into disrepair over the following decades due to inadequate maintenance and was demolished in March 1936 due to its dilapidated condition. On July 18, 1936, the Thüringerwald-Verein Coburg e.V. inaugurated the Alexandrine Hut on the same site, built partly using stones from the former tower. Eisfeld station used to be of much greater importance. It was due to the s.g. Werra Railway, which ran from Eisenach via Meiningen, Eisfeld to Coburg and Lichtenfels. The line between Eisfeld and Coburg was interrupted by the Iron Curtain and never rebuilt. So today there is only the connection Meiningen - Sonneberg. Furthermore, a narrow-gauge railway that led to Schönbrunn began in Eisfeld. The 18 km long, 1000 mm wide, narrow-gauge railway connected Eisfeld with the central Schleusetal to the north. Passenger trains were discontinued on this route in 1967. After freight traffic was also discontinued in 1973, the line was dismantled in 1974.
