The Baroque town hall, built in 1752 with its bright yellow paint, is an architectural gem in Hilter. The Baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun, who was working on the monastery in Bad Iburg at the same time, likely contributed to its construction.

The Düte rises in the Teutoburg Forest, flows from Georgsmarienhütte through the western part of Osnabrück's city center, and empties into the Hase River in Lotte-Wersen, North Rhine-Westphalia. The Fauna-Flora-Habitat area encompasses a river stretch of approximately 31 kilometers in length in the district and city of Osnabrück. Within the city, the entire river course and some widened areas, with a length of a good 13 kilometers, are part of the Natura 2000 protected area system. In large sections of the urban stretch, the Düte is still characterized by a meandering course. The banks are often still covered with a typical woody cover of alder and ash, or tree and shrub willows. Many sections of the river have a near-natural appearance and are often classified as specially protected biotopes. Nevertheless, significant problems exist from a water hydraulic perspective. In recent decades, significant erosion of the riverbed and banks has occurred, resulting in depressions. As a visible consequence of this erosion, existing woody plants may be threatened by undercutting.

The Hase is a 169.6 km long, eastern and orographically right tributary of the middle Ems River in the Osnabrück district, the independent city of Osnabrück, the Cloppenburg district, the Emsland district (all in Lower Saxony), and the Steinfurt district (in North Rhine-Westphalia). In 2015/2016, the Oesede Monastery Local History Society rebuilt the historically significant Stone Tower at the roundabout at the entrance to Oesede Monastery. Its history dates back to the late Middle Ages. In 1441, Count Johann von Hoya (the "Wild Jan") robbed the Osnabrück citizens of their cattle in the Fledder during a feud. The citizens rushed after him, but broke off their pursuit at nightfall at the Stone Tower. That same year, Johann von Hoya was captured during the storming of Fürstenau Castle by the city of Osnabrück and imprisoned in the Johanniskasten (Steiniger Turm) in Osnabrück's Bucksturm (Bucksturm) for six years until 1447. During another feud between Osnabrück and the robber baron Friedrich von Buck, an unsuccessful meeting took place in 1450 in the Steiniger Turm between representatives of the city of Osnabrück and the Osnabrück cathedral dean Albert von Bevessen († 1458), whose epitaph has been preserved in the ambulatory of the Osnabrück cathedral.
