The early 14th-century civic tower once served, in addition to its defensive function, as a debtors' prison on its second floor when a debtor couldn't pay or provide a reliable guarantor. Drunkards, rioters, adulterers, and parents whose children were truant from school also received a short "tower punishment." Until the end of the 17th century, a circular enclosure preceded the tower.

The landmark of the town of Meisenheim am Glan is the Evangelical Castle Church on the Castle Square, one of the most important late Gothic buildings on the left bank of the Rhine. In contrast to many churches on the left bank of the Rhine, the Castle Church has been mercifully protected from major damage for centuries. The Evangelical Castle Church, together with the Herzog-Wolfgang-Haus, is the only remaining part of the former castle in Meisenheim. The cornerstone of the church building was laid in 1479 and construction was completed in 1504. http://www.stadt-meisenheim.de/historie/evangelische-schlosskirche/

The ascent pulls a bit in the calves, but it's definitely worth it. Beautiful castle ruins to discover, especially in the evening in the light of the setting sun. There is a viewing platform and even a long table with benches for a rest.

In Meisenheim, parts of the old city wall including the former defensive towers and one of three city gates (see: Untertor) are still preserved today. The defense towers on the Glan are all surrounded and hardly recognizable as such, because they were included in the apartments. But you can walk along the city walls that connect them, with a view of the adjacent river. The town charter for Meisenheim in 1315 With the granting of city rights by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian in 1315, Georg I (Count of Veldenz) received the necessary funds to renew or strengthen the fortifications of his former settlement. In addition to certain advantages that went along with the granting of city rights (privileges, privileges, freedoms, etc.), Meisenheim also took on the obligation to give the rural population in the vicinity, including their mobile belongings and their cattle, refuge within its new walls in the event of war

The castle church in Meisenheim is a late Gothic hall church in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention. The building is a three-aisled, rib-vaulted hall church with five bays and a square antechamber, which is flanked to the south by a side chapel (burial place of the Count Palatine) and to the north by the sacristy. The actual choir is unique, the floor plan of a concealed central building with 7 sides of a decagon to be completed. In the choir head, in the fore choir yoke and in the southern side chapel, the ribbed vaults are significantly richer and more complex than in the nave, and there, by the way, different vault shapes in the southern and northern aisles. In the southern chapel there are even free-floating vaulted ribs. The vaults in the nave are supported by round pillars without templates. The tracery that changes from window to window is also varied. A relatively compact tower forms the western end, which continues from the third floor in an octagon with a blown spire. On the east side, towards the lower Amtsgasse, the church area is closed off with a high retaining wall in which there is a late Gothic access portal with staircases on the inside. Above it was the building inscription from 1479, which was however destroyed. Today this coat of arms stone has been replaced by a replica made in 1911.

Basically you should wear sturdy shoes. The path is not suitable for prams or people with walking disabilities. The view from the viewing platform, however, compensates for any effort of the ascent. Certainly also a highlight for enjoying sunsets - if necessary, pack a delicious drop of Nahe wine in your backpack ;)

The castle was built around 1240 to monitor a nearby military road by the Counts of Veldenz, who appointed Eberhard von Lautern as a lieutenant. Until 1432 the castle remained in the possession of the von Lautern family, who from 1247 had been called "von Montfort". In the 15th century, the residents of the Ganerbeburg were sometimes robber barons. In 1456 the troops of the Archbishop of Mainz Diether von Mainz and the Elector Friedrich I of the Palatinate conquered the castle complex and destroyed it. In 1480, Simon Boos von Waldeck received the castle as an inheritance, with permission to rebuild it. The Boos von Waldeck family, from the Waldeck Castle of the same name in the Hunsrück region, had been part of Montfort Castle since the end of the 14th century. Although there are some signs of a reconstruction of one of the residential towers, Montfort remained in ruins for many centuries. For many years the ruin was divided between four private forest owners and local residents. According to certain safety-related requirements of the supervisory authority, the Bad Kreuznach district took over the ruins in 1969, had them secured and renovated. Today you can visit the castle ruins of Montfort free of charge.
