Three castles on three humps of a ridge above the city of Annweiler in the Palatinate: the Trifels Group. Advancing from the Rhine into the Palatinate Forest, one of the first thing that immediately catches the eye is the Trifels Imperial Castle. In the 12th and 13th centuries it was one of the most important sites of Salian-Hohenstaufen rule over the Holy Roman Empire. Built from sandstone, it sits enthroned on a rocky reef, whose wildly jagged, vertically sloping tip dominates the forest on the 500-meter-high Sonnenberg.

The small town of St. Martin is worth a visit at any time of year. Wine bars, vineyards and cafés line up endlessly. It is a pleasure to walk through the town and of course to stop for a drink.

The former castle was more or less destroyed. But then it was reconstructed again. Information boards or e.g. Replicas of the Reichskleinodien give the visitor a good impression!
