A beautiful baroque palace with two Chinese pavilions facing each other. When it was built approximately 260 years ago, this was a pheasant garden serving as a hunting and game park, and the ground floor of the palace actually housed the pheasants' breeding quarters. However, the building was soon used for social purposes, and the pheasants had to breed elsewhere. Today, the building houses the Forestry Education Center.

The baroque castle was largely rebuilt between 1955 and 1966 after it was destroyed in World War II. Today it houses the State Museum. The 165 steps of the 42-meter-high tower lead to the viewing platform, from which you have a magnificent view of the Palatinate Forest and parts of the Black Forest.

The Grand Duke Karl Friedrich Monument stands in Karlsruhe's Palace Square. In his right hand, the Grand Duke holds the document dated July 23, 1783, abolishing serfdom in Baden. The grand ducal coat of arms from 1807 to 1830 is displayed on the pedestal. The four female figures at each corner of the pedestal represent Old Baden, the region along the Main and Neckar rivers, the Black Forest (to the left), and the Lake Constance region (to the right). https://ka.stadtwiki.net/Gro%C3%9Fherzog-Karl-Friedrich-Denkmal

A very beautiful statue! But my highlight is the square around it! A colorful and bustling scene crisscrossing the square with great events like the Ice Age or the Castle Light Show.

In 1765, the Pheasant Palace was built under Margrave Karl-Friedrich on the edge of the "Bocksblöße" forest clearing, east of the palace tower. It is a Chinese-style pleasure and teahouse with two opposing pavilions, also in the Chinese style. The 'throne' was commissioned by the House of Baden in memory of Margrave Charles III Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach on the occasion of the city's 300th anniversary in 2015, designed by the artist, then cast in bronze and finally erected at the castle. The Margrave's throne is on a tree stump, on which anyone who wants to can sit down and play the Margrave for a moment. The tree quote reminds us that Charles III Wilhelm dreamed of founding the city of Karlsruhe in the nearby Hardtwald. Artwork by Stefan Strumbel Size approx. 185/130/125 cm Material bronze Year 2015 Source: https://m.karlsruhe.de/db/kunst/thron.html?kl=0

Is an impressive castle complex with a tower that can be climbed. During our visit it was very foggy and cloudy. We decided not to go up. It will then be determined on the next visit.

Of course, there are enough people here who have described the castle. Here I am talking about the castle tower: "Perhaps the most original and most elegantly proportioned creation of Karlsruhe classicism is the helmet of the castle tower, with which Wilhelm Jeremias Müller crowned both his work and the residence in 1785. Ten years after completing the extensive reconstruction of the castle, which was still carried out in the Baroque style, he had the curved hood of the old, disproportionately high castle tower removed and built a new dome-like roof structure with a balcony and lantern on the remaining tower shaft. Müller was a master at seamlessly matching the design of the tower helmet to the overall appearance of the castle. The tower structure is also a textbook example of successful proportions. Its harmony arises primarily from the fact that Müller - consciously or unconsciously - applied the rule of the "golden ratio". This states that two lines are in an ideal relationship to one another when the larger line is to the smaller as the sum of both is to the larger. It is the same here: the height of the dome to the height of the lantern is the same as the total height of the lantern to the height of the dome. The castle tower is open to the public via the Baden State Museum." ("City Walks in Karlsruhe - Classicism", book by Friedemann Schäfer)

The Pheasant Palace is a pleasure and tea house in Karlsruhe's Pheasant Garden, east of the palace tower. It was built in the Chinese style between 1764 and 1765. Together with two opposing pavilions, also in the Chinese style, it forms an architectural ensemble around an oval square. Initially, the building was used to raise pheasants until it was converted into a palace around 1773 during the transformation of the palace garden into an English landscape garden. Source: Wikipedia The buildings are now used by the Baden-Württemberg Forestry Service.

The castle was presumably built by the Weissenburg Monastery (St. Peter and Paul) to protect a crossing over the Rhine. The warlike Alemanni and Hungarian cavalry came up the river from the southeast. After the castle was abandoned, it was thoroughly demolished and the material used for other buildings. Today, only the hill and the ditch-like cut remain. An explanatory panel is available.
