오늘날 '사과나무'를 뜻하는 중세 고지 독일어 'Affalter'에서 유래한 'Affelderle'라는 이름을 가진 건물에 대해서는 더 이상 많이 알려져 있지 않습니다. 이곳은 '잃어버린 성', '버려진 장소'로, 더 이상 볼 것이 많지 않고 확실하게 말할 수 있는 것도 많지 않습니다. 이 성은 한때 'Streitstein' 또는 'Schloss Streithberg'(1574년에 언급됨)라고도 불렸으며, 아마도 10세기에 Weißenburg 수도원에 의해 라인강 횡단 지점인 Pfortz(Maximiliansau) – Knielingen을 방어하고 노르만족과 헝가리인의 습격으로부터 보호하기 위해 건설되었을 것입니다. 성은 원래 나무와 흙으로만 지어졌으며, 11세기 또는 12세기에 이르러서야 돌로 된 구조물이 생겼습니다: 강력한 환형 성벽과 방어 해자를 가로지르는 도개교를 갖춘 토루 언덕 성입니다. 이러한 성은 프랑스에서 '모트'(Motte, '흙덩이', '더미')라고 불리는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 주로 나무로 지어진 초기 중세 성의 한 유형으로, 주요 특징은 일반적으로 탑 모양의 건물과 함께 인공적으로 만들어진 흙 언덕입니다.

The Germersheim Fortress was built during the reign of King Ludwig I. The foundation stone was laid on October 18, 1834. The fortress was built mostly from red bricks.
