In the Middle Ages, the towns of Weiersbach and Hoppstädten, together with Leitzweiler, Heimbach and Freisen, belonged to the Werdenstein lordship. In the 16th century, a branch of the Lords of Oberstein first called themselves "Lords of Werdenstein" after the lordship. Jakob von Eberstein married the daughter who was entitled to inherit and built the castle of the same name, "Werdenstein", around 1550.
