The first documented mention of the hilltop castle dates back to 1213, when the Imperial Abbey of Kornelimünster near Aachen appointed Philipp III von Bolanden as "castellanus" and governor. Experts partly doubt or reject the first conquest in 1253. What is certain is the siege, conquest and destruction by King Rudolph of Habsburg in 1282. The castle was banned from being rebuilt. From 1290 onwards, the ruins were owned by the Counts Palatine, who gave them up in favour of the Electorate of Mainz in 1344. A new building was then quickly constructed. A double ring wall enclosed a rectangular residential tower and an inner courtyard of the main castle. A forecourt was located to the north. In 1397, after the Pope had appointed John II of Nassau Archbishop of Mainz, ignoring the election of the Mainz Cathedral Chapter the previous year, Archbishop Gottfried von Leiningen, elected in 1396, barricaded himself in the castle. Only after tough negotiations did he give up the bishop's seat and was instead given the office of provost of Mainz Cathedral. His concession prevented another attack on the castle and possible further destruction. The castle had been left to decay since the 16th century. The remains were blown up in 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession. In 1834 Franz Wilhelm von Barfus bought the ruins and converted a tower into his residence. His heirs sold the castle to Baron von Rehfuß in 1877 and he sold it to Consul Chosodowsky in 1889. The castle was given its current appearance by Baron Nikolaus von Kirsch-Puricelli, a wealthy industrialist and owner of the Rheinböllerhütte. From 1899 to 1902, Kirsch-Puricelli had the castle rebuilt into a neo-Gothic residential castle in the Tudor style according to plans by the Regensburg architect Strebel. Additional residential buildings and an observation tower were built on the site of the outer castle. Reichenstein was the last castle in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley to be rebuilt in the spirit of Rhine Romanticism. After the castle was sold by the family in the 1990s, media entrepreneur Lambert Lensing-Wolff, a descendant of the Kirsch-Puricelli family, acquired Reichenstein Castle in 2014 as a weekend residence and also runs a museum and a hotel with a restaurant here.

A very impressive castle complex. Reichenstein Castle, also known as Falkenburg, is a castle in the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. It stands on a ledge on the eastern slope of the Binger Forest above the Rhineland-Palatinate municipality of Trechtingshausen.

The Rossel, an artificial ruin, is located on the western boundary between Rüdesheim am Rhein and its district of Assmannshausen in the Hessian Rheingau-Taunus district and is now a destination in the Niederwald landscape park with a view of the opposite mouth of the Nahe into the Rhine and the Binger Hole. At their feet, about 400 meters to the south, are the ruins of Ehrenfels Castle and, on a small offshore island in the Rhine, the Bingen Mouse Tower. The Rossel is about a 20-minute walk from the Niederwald Monument and a 10-minute walk from the Niederwald hunting lodge. Count Johann Friedrich Karl Maximilian von Ostein had the artificial ruins built in 1774 as part of the transformation of the Niederwald into a landscape park for his guests. It was named after a pile of Taunus quartzite rubble of the same name in its immediate vicinity. The Rossel consists of a square main tower about 5 meters wide with a small terrace to the south facing the Rhine and a small stair tower to the north-west. The ruins built from field stones are decorated with castle elements. The Rossel is surrounded by several vantage points, such as the Naheblick (east) and the Knights' Hall (northwest) and the so-called magic cave (north), an artificial cave about 60 meters long. The Rossel lies above the Rhine curve and the Binger Loch. On the opposite side you can see Bingen and Bingerbrück and the Nahe estuary on the left. Directly opposite or to the right are the Hartberg with Teufelsfels and the Rheinberg with the Damianskopf, as well as the steep Kreuzbach valley in between. Above the Nahe estuary you can see further into Rheinhessen. Below the Rossel you can see the ruins of Ehrenfels Castle and the Mouse Tower on a small island on the Rhine.

In the 18th century, more precisely in 1788, Karl Maximilian Graf von Ostein had a monopteros built on the Niederwald above Rüdesheim am Rhein, which became part of his newly created park. Even then, his often important guests were enthusiastic about the grandiose view of the Rheingau with its impressive river - the Rhine. Even today, the view from the Niederwald temple conveys pure Rhine romance. The magnificent view to the south shows the Rhine Valley in its grandeur and uniqueness in every season.

Small suspension bridge, about 50m long, on the edge of a nature trail. Fun for children, of course, and also for larger hikers.

The Niederwald monument is located on the edge of the Niederwald landscape park above the town of Rüdesheim am Rhein. At its feet are the vineyards of the Rüdesheimer Berg. The monument was to commemorate the unification of Germany in 1871. Planning and construction took a total of twelve years from the first suggestion in 1871 to the inauguration on September 28, 1883. The construction period was six years. Together with the Barbarossa memorial on the Kyffhäuserberg, the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz, the Hermannsdenkmal near Detmold in the southern Teutoburg Forest, the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial on the Porta Westfalica, the Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Leipzig, the Bismarck memorial in Hamburg and the Walhalla near Donaustauf The Niederwald monument is one of the monumental memorial buildings in Germany, which were predominantly built during the time of the German Empire. The Niederwald Monument has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002.
