The customs tower was built around the year 1000 as a pass barrier on the road between Mainz and Bad Kreuznach! The name goes back to a legend of Saint Ursula of Cologne! On her way back from a pilgrimage to Rome, she crossed the Selz here with her entourage of 11,000 virgins. In the hope that another 11,000 virgins would follow the same path, the Schnorressänger from Elsheim took over the sponsorship in 2006.

Only one freestanding tower remains of the former Schwabsburg Castle. This tower, made of massive, bossed ashlars, was once the keep of the complex. Located on a Roman military road leading to Mommenheim, it once served to protect and maintain the power of the Hohenstaufen dynasty in and around Nierstein and Oppenheim. Where the castle was built is unknown, but a connection to the construction of Landskron Castle in Oppenheim is suspected, which suggests a date between 1125 and 1245. These buildings were destroyed by the Spanish in 1620 during the Thirty Years' War. Although no further remains of the complex exist, old sources mention a dining hall, a curtain wall, and various residential and commercial buildings. https://www.rheinhessen.de/a-burg-schwabsburg

Windeck Castle is a small castle complex from the 13th century in the style of a tower castle with Gothic residential buildings. Windeck Castle seems to have originally been a moated castle with a ring moat (moat) and at least one ring wall. The castle cannot be visited, renovation work has been completed for the most part. When the municipality of Heidesheim acquired Windeck Castle in 1993, it was in a state of ruin. Since then, the community has made great efforts to restore the building to a respectable condition: first they renewed the elaborate roof structure and roof, then the front door and windows. She replastered the building, painted it in the Mainz red of the late Middle Ages and had the tower painted in a natural color. Finally, she installed a staircase in the tower that leads safely to the former roof plateau with its impressive view. In its efforts to protect the Windeck, the community is tirelessly and enthusiastically supported by the association Heimatmuseum Burg Windeck e.V. The care of the still considerable property is taken care of by volunteers.

Schwabsburg: a bold little town with an impressive castle, the town meanders through the valley like a snake below the castle and, thanks to its layout, retains its historical independence despite being incorporated into Nierstein.

From here, you have a magnificent view in both directions, into the Selz Valley and to the north as far as the Rhine and the Rheingau. The current building complex dates from the late 18th to the 20th century. Henn suggests that a Roman estate, a villa rustica, may well have stood on this site, even though no archaeological traces of it have yet been found. Somewhat remote from the hustle and bustle in Nierstein, about 3 km inland from the Rhine, lies the district of Schwabsburg with the castle of the same name. The castle towers attractively above the village and offers beautiful views of the surrounding area. Not spectacular, but very pleasantly quiet and tranquil.
