The extensive pond landscape in Riddagshausen is the result of the work of the Cistercian monks, who drained the then very swampy area and created fish ponds. Of the original 28 ponds, 11 still exist today, of which the Mittelteich and Kreuzteich (between which the excellent path marked here runs) are among the largest. The ponds are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. The charming group of buildings consisting of a pleasure palace and outbuildings is surrounded by an English landscape park, much of which has been restored in recent years. The view extends over ponds, winding paths and along groups of trees to a small temple in the distance. A visit is particularly worthwhile in May when the large rhododendrons are blooming.
