Once a place of pilgrimage - today it is an enchanted place

The late Gothic castle was besieged, destroyed, and rebuilt several times over the course of its eventful history. The current complex consists of the upper castle with the 34-meter-high Golo Tower and the slightly lower outer castle. The castle is protected from the city by a large castle gate, and on the other side by the keep and a moat complex. The former moat is now a ring road spanned by a 20-meter-long Gothic stone bridge. The Genovevaburg Castle houses two exhibitions of the Eifel Museum: EifelTotal and the German Slate Mine.

As so often over the centuries, only a ruin remains of the once imposing imperial castle (mentioned as such in documents in AD 1000). During the French occupation of the Rhineland, it suffered the typical fate: conquest and destruction.

The Genovevaburg is a symbol of the city of Mayen and part of a medieval city fortification. It was first mentioned in a document in 1281. It houses the Eifel Museum with the exhibition areas Eifeltotal and the German slate mine. In the summer months, the Mayen Castle Festival takes place in the courtyard.

Beautiful half-timbered houses on the Rhine promenade, which are mainly used by restaurants.
