Great town hall/castle with charming bridges and beautifully maintained castle square!

Between the castle and the church lies a beautiful park

The 16th-century Renaissance palace is now Hardheim's town hall. Formerly surrounded by a moat, the castle moat now houses a small alpine garden.

Beautiful building. The restaurant wasn't open when we arrived. Apparently closed since September 2020.

Lower Hardheim Castle was a lowland castle from the High Middle Ages on the southern edge of the town center of Hardheim. Its remnant, the Stone Tower, the former keep, is now a local cultural monument.

Hardheim Castle was built in 1561 by Junker Wolf von Hardheim and his wife Margareta von Berlichingen, as stated in an inscription above the entrance portal. The master builder was Urban Khaltschmid von Lindau. In 1858, the municipality of Hardheim acquired it from the Grand Duchy of Baden. In the same year, it was converted into an elementary school (Sunday school) with a teacher's apartment. It was also used for church purposes. In 1929, the municipal administration moved its headquarters from the town hall on the market square to the castle.

The chapel ruins lie amidst tall beech and maple trees. They were donated by the Lords of Hardheim at the beginning of the 15th century and were originally called "Chapel of Our Lady in the Forest," later "St. Catherine's Chapel in the Valley." A hermitage also stood near the chapel until 1768, before the hermit was removed. The chapel, also known as the Kirchlein, had long served as a place of pilgrimage.
