A truly romantic lock on the LDM canal

A former lock house on the canal invites you to linger with its cozy beer garden. Hearty delicacies such as snacks from the smokehouse, bratwursts with sauerkraut or homemade potato salad and sour zest, cheese and radish; and from the grill there are knuckles, ducks, suckling pigs, etc. - also available to pick up at home.

Very nice to choose as a destination for a bike tour

Towing on the Ludwigskanal Towing is the pulling of ships on waterways by draft animals. A real towboat from the Royal Bavarian Canal Shipping Company invites you on board: The towboat "Elfriede" sets off from the "Zum Ludwigskanal" restaurant in Schwarzenbach near Burgthann and is pulled by the cold-blooded "Florian" to the Dörlbacher Einschnitt. From there it goes back to the pier. During the trip, which lasts around 45 minutes, the captain tells interesting stories about the history of the canal. Neumarkt's landmark, visible from afar, towers 150 meters above the city. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1283, but the complex is certainly much older. The castle area had fallen into disrepair since the beginning of the 17th century, and excavations and renovation work began in 1997 by the Wolfsteinfreunde Neumarkt association.

Visiting the large rock cellar is really fun. Already at the entrance you feel a coolness. A flashlight is a must, just to get around the wet, greasy spots on the floor.

It is beautiful to drive along the canal. At the towboat Elfriede you can find out what the ships used to look like on the canal. Turning was not necessary. The ships had a rudder fore and aft.
