Neumarkt's landmark, visible from afar, towers 150 meters above the city. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1283, but the complex is certainly much older. The castle area had fallen into disrepair since the beginning of the 17th century, and excavations and renovation work began in 1997 by the Wolfsteinfreunde Neumarkt association.

Despite severe destruction in the Second World War, the historic buildings in the old town were largely preserved. The old town is dominated by the three large church towers of the St. Johannes Minster, the Hofkirche and the Christ Church. St. Johannes was built under Count Palatine Johann from 1404 to 1434 as a Gothic hall church and is particularly reminiscent of the St. Lorenz Church in Nuremberg, especially in the tower. The Court Church of Our Lady, a former Lady Chapel, was expanded as a castle church from 1418 and completed under Frederick II around 1523. The Protestant Christ Church outside the city wall on the site of the former castle garden was part of the former Capuchin monastery, which existed from 1670. The Count Palatine Castle on Residenzplatz has existed since around 1200 and was completed as a former moated castle in the Renaissance style by Friedrich II between 1520 and 1539. The Reitstadel (around 1415), also located in the castle district, initially served as an armory and later as a horse stable. The building burned down completely in 1945 and was not rebuilt as a concert hall until 1980. The long street market as the main axis of the old town is divided by the town hall into the Upper and Lower Markets. It was also built around 1415 as a Gothic council building and, after its destruction in 1945, was rebuilt true to the original in 1956 and 1957. The old town is surrounded by the city wall, which, like the city moat, is only partially preserved. It is home to the Powder Tower, the Debt Tower, the Bertleinsturm and the Gimplturm. Of the former three city gates, only the monastery gate as a passage to the Christ Church and the lower gate, which was rebuilt in 1989 after it was blown up in 1945, remain. Part of the city fortifications are the former barracks from 1720, which housed Bavarian Chevauleger regiments from 1814 to 1909. In Bräugasse, what is probably the oldest surviving town house in the city, the so-called Schreiberhaus, is being renovated. Parts of the walls can be dated back to 1430. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neumarkt_in_der_Oberpfalz#In_der_Altstadt
