10월 11, 2024, View of Braunau am Inn from the Inn Bridge
In 1260, the first bridge over the Inn was built on the orders of Duke Henry XIII. This wooden bridge was repeatedly destroyed in the following centuries by floods, gusts of wind, wars and fires. After the ice blast in January 1880 had torn away part of the wooden bridge that connected Braunau with Simbach, a steel truss bridge on brick pillars and abutments was built jointly by the Austrian and Bavarian governments between 1892 and 1894. This bridge was blown up at the end of the war in 1945. It was not until 1950 that the new bridge was built jointly by the Austrian and Bavarian governments through the Linz-based "VOEST". It is a so-called "deck bridge", i.e. the roadway is installed above the supporting structure so that there is a clear view in all directions. Through one of the curved alleys you reach the large town square, which already had these dimensions when the town was founded. On the lower town square there are still a considerable number of Gothic houses, with their narrow fronts, high pointed gables and rear buildings that cannot be seen from the square. Since these houses have only been changed a little, we can still find the narrow, often quite winding staircases inside. With a few exceptions, the middle town square was largely destroyed in the great town fire in 1874. On the east side in particular, the high gable walls had to be torn down and the roofs turned 90 degrees. On the upper town square we find the houses of the once wealthy cloth makers and linen weavers. The houses have wide fronts, the windows are framed by delicate window frames and the interior of these houses has wide staircases and corridors, as well as rooms with some very beautiful stucco ceilings.
