There was already a church in Aldersbach during the sedentary period of Bishop Engelmar of Passau (875-899), which was first mentioned in the Mondsee Monastery's tradition codex for the middle of the 8th century. Around the year 1120, an Augustinian monastery was founded here by the local nobility. In 1123 at the latest, Bishop Otto I of Bamberg took over the initiative, similar to the nearby Asbach Monastery and also the Osterhofen Monastery.
