A pretty, tranquil market square, a place where you can linger for a while. The small town of Waging is worth a visit and well worth seeing.

The Traunstein town square in its current form was originally created as the main market and Schrannenplatz. The town square is the historical and cultural centre of the town and definitely a highlight. The Lindl fountain is the landmark of the town square. It was built in 1526 and shows the famous Traunstein salt maker in traditional costume, which symbolically commemorates the town's salt history. With its charming mixture of history, architecture and lively city life, the square offers numerous historical sights and a special atmosphere. It is not without reason that Traunstein is considered the heart of the Chiemgau and is well worth a visit.

The approximately 250 meter long and 85 meter wide square was created as the main, market and Schrannenplatz in the middle of the 14th century as part of Ludwig of Bavaria's urban policy and the organization of the salt trade and transport from Reichenhall via Traunstein to Munich. The salt deposits and the salt pan operations since 1619 remained decisive for the development of Traunstein until the 19th century. Very narrow streets and a lot of traffic. When we visited there were still market stalls set up around which the cars swerved very quickly. Partly dangerous with the bike.

The "main square" of Traunstein is called Stadtplatz. It is framed by the parish church of St. Oswald and the Jackl Tower. In the middle is the Lindl fountain.

The Jacklturm is not an old city gate or city tower. The demolition of the Jackl Tower, also known as the "Lower Tower", which was badly damaged in the town fire in 1851, left a clear gap in the town square. The support association Alt-Traunstein, founded in 1983, managed to close it in 1999. After almost 150 years, the tower completes and enriches the cityscape again.

Trauwenstain itself was first mentioned in 1245 in a document from Baumburg Abbey. The name means castle on the Traun, and with some probability this was the seat of the Lords of Truna, surrounded by a small settlement. It was only the Wittelsbach family who expanded and fortified them according to plan and thus controlled the Traun crossing of the important salt road from Reichenhall to Munich on the border to the Archbishopric of Salzburg.
