Wonderful place, we come here at least once a year.

This is a bird sanctuary, and you can observe many birds. There are several information boards at the barrier.

Fortunately, this beautiful stretch is a place where you don't have to pay an 'admission fee' to enjoy the view of the public ocean until you reach the first bathing spot, and you can even take your bike along the paths in front of the dike. ...and you don't have to push your bike until you get there either... Yes, there's a hint of frustration here about the cycling policy on the German North Sea coast... 😉

In principle, a nice idea for braving the tide and thus the lack of water at low tide. It's just not for cyclists passing through, as reckless, selfish cyclists have managed to push their bikes during the bathing season by ignoring the rules, so that bicycles are now completely banned from the areas around Büsum where you can see the water (or rather, the mudflats). According to my information, violating this ban is supposed to result in severe penalties, as the 'beach patrols' immediately call the police if a bicycle appears near the shore. They made an exception for my folded Brompton… 😉
