Only when extreme storm or hurricane tides reach more than 1.70 m above mean high tide in Sehestedt does the more than 3-meter-thick "moor island" begin to float. In the process, pieces break off, become deposited on the dike or in the salt marshes, or are washed away and ground down by subsequent floods. Thus, the moor gradually shrinks. One of its special features is that two completely different ecosystems border each other here: the freshwater ecosystem of the moor and the saltwater system of the salt marshes and mudflats. The moor is accessible via a 150-meter-long boardwalk in the southern part, but otherwise, due to its uniqueness and sensitivity, it is not accessible in order to preserve it for as long as possible. The Ellernteich is a real curiosity - because this pond was created twice. The Grand Duke of Oldenburg, Peter Friedrich Ludwig, had a park built here in Rastede next to his summer residence. His son and successor, Paul Friedrich August, expanded the park in the style of an English landscape park. In the course of this, the local lowland, which was covered with alders, known in Low German as Ellern, was converted into a fish pond in 1842. How complex the undertaking was can be seen from the fact that the pond was only completed 9 years later, in 1848. When it was completed, a new line of sight was created from the castle across the Ellern and Mühlenteich ponds to the water mill.

Over time, Varel harbor has undergone many changes, but its romance has remained. Today, the harbor is a colorful mixture of moorings for private pleasure boats, the home port of individual fishing boats, a location for commercial enterprises and a tourist attraction. Many guests come to Varel harbor to enjoy fish in the fresh sea breeze in the various restaurants. Watch the fishermen smoking eels, have a small fish snack or enjoy a Frisian beer in the smallest pub in Germany. In the harbor area, traces of the old Christiansburg can still be found, which was built in the 17th century by the Danish King Christian V. A map shows the old fortification walls and moats.
