The Großbeeren Memorial Tower is a 32-meter-high reinforced concrete structure inaugurated in 1913. It commemorates the victorious Battle of Großbeeren on August 23, 1813, in which Prussian troops defeated Napoleon's army and repelled the threat to Berlin.

This is a general information panel about the history of the GDR and the associated construction of the Berlin Wall. There are pictures of the border at this location, the refugees from August 14, 1961, and a reference to the memorial site of the former emergency reception camp. Between 1949 and 1990, approximately four million people left the GDR for the FRG. The inner-German border was closed in 1952, and Berlin's external borders were also sealed; the road crossing at Marienfelder Allee was closed around 1954. Nevertheless, the largest flow of refugees came to Berlin, as the inner-city sectors remained open. About two kilometers from Marienfelde was a reception camp that organized the reception of refugees: There, people were housed, cared for, and went through the process of obtaining a residence permit in the FRG or West Berlin. Up to 3,000 people could find refuge there at one time. With the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the number of refugees decreased significantly. However, the Marienfelde emergency reception center remained the first point of contact for refugees and migrants from the GDR until 1990. A total of approximately 1.35 million people went through the reception process in Marienfelde. Today, this historic site houses the central memorial and exhibition facility dedicated to the flight in divided Germany: the Marienfelde Emergency Reception Center Memorial. The exhibition commemorates the causes, course, and consequences of the East German refugee movement.
