The remains of this Augustinian priory include a gatehouse adorned with the De Roos family heraldry. You can also learn about the priory's role in World War II, including Winston Churchill's secret visit and its use in training and testing for D-Day.

Note that the Abbey itself is English Heritage and has both cafe and toilets available accessible without paying admission/requiring membership. The only downside is that to get there from Rievaulx Terrace it is down a steep hill.

Large car park under the White Horse, £2.50 all day as at July 2024. Free parking in a smaller off-road car park on Osgodby Bank at the southern end of Hood Hill Plantation. Very steep steps up to the top, but there is a metal handrail that alternates from the left to right side of the steps. Fabulous views from the top, although as others mention, you can only really see and appreciate the horse from the bottom of the bank.

Helmsley is a market town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire.

This National Trust property is a 17th-century manor house. You will find a sheltered walled garden here outside, and inside an oak-panelled hall, family rooms and even a haunted room! As this belongs to The National Trust, you will need to pay to get in, but it's well-worth it!

This is a lovely place to stop. (If you don't, you're missing one of the most famous landmarks in North Yorkshire!). Typically there's an ice-cream and tea/coffee van here, so you should be able to get a snack. There are a few benches provided from which you will be able to admire the massive Kilburn White Horse on the slopes above. Near where the van is usually parked, you will see the steep steps heading up to the Horse. It's worth securing your bike somewhere and walking up to enjoy the superb views from above.

This is a lovely place to stop on your tour if you need some food and drink at a pleasant inn in a lovely spot. It's a sizeable inn with great staff. I'd recommend to use the seats outside (street-side) for great views over Kirkham Valley, including Kirkham Priory (which is 1 minute ride from here or 5 minutes walking from down the road from here). The inn is just a lovely place to stop and enjoy your life.

The charming town of Helmsley is nestled in the heart of the picturesque North Yorkshire Moors. Helmsley offers plenty to do and see. You could visit the imposing Helmsley Castle, a magnificent medieval fortress that offers a glimpse into the town's past, wander through the vibrant Helmsley Walled Garden, or take a leisurely stroll through the bustling streets.

Ampleforth Abbey has been a working abbey for Benedictine monks since 1802. It's an imposing and imposing space. The Abbey Church can be visited, and there is also a tearoom here and Visitor Centre. The impressive grounds around the Abbey include the Ampleforth College, which is an independent Catholic boarding school.

It's worth stopping here to pay respects to those who fell during the 1st World War. There are many such memorials in Britain, of course, and in the bustle of cities and towns, it can be easy to miss them. There is a rather impressive lion sculpture in the memorial area here, too.

The incredible ruins of Kirkham Priory are located in the village of Kirkham right next to River Derwent. This was an Augustinian priory, founded in 1120 by the Lord of Helmsley (who also founded Rievaulx Abbey). The site is maintained by English Heritage and you will need to pay to get in, it's definitely worth the entry fee though. An unmissable experience, particularly if you are into history like I am.
