Well worth the detour down the track to the church of st Catherine's. Inside there's a font decorated with pagan marigold carvings, and the moving memorial at the door. Don't miss the stepping stones, cross if you dare

Nice road with incredible views, although at times the road may be covered by small streams, go slower on those as they can be slippery

Remains of the Roman Bath House. There was a fort on the other side of the road extending to the cliffs along the sea shore.

Absolutely beautiful area, the viaduct is narrow you need to be careful crossing

The Roman bath house was between the fort and the vicus (civilian settlement). There's an interpretive board here telling you about it.

The vast expanse of the sandy Seascale beach stretches for miles, offering breathtaking vistas that extend across the sea to the Isle of Man and the Galloway mountains.

Woodlands Tea Room and Gift Shop has earned local renown since its humble beginnings in 1954 when it started as a small shed nestled at the bottom of a garden. Over the years, it has expanded into two spacious cabins, nestled amidst woodland along the banks of the River Irt.

The Fell and Rock Climbing Club Memorial Window in a window on the south side is an engraving of Napes Needle with a slight misquote of the opening to Psalm 121 (strength instead of help). This should definitely be seen in your visit to St Olafs but also worth a read are the various documents on the walls about the history of the church. Do also look outside at some of the gravestones. many of these relate to famous climbers

Doctor Bridge over the river Esk is a grade 2 listed building. It's a probable 17th century packhorse bridge which was widened in 1734 for surgeon Edward Tyson. This is probably why it's called Doctor Bridge. The bridge gives access from the Woolpack Inn to the south of the river, the river path and the fells.

The infamous Hardknott Pass is a real challenge for drivers but parking at the top of the pass opens up a wealth of adventure opportunities. Hiking to the Wainwright summit of Hard Knott from here is easy, while Harter Fell is also an excellent objective to the south. It's also an ideal start point for a wild camping expedition into Upper Eskdale.

Standing on the banks of the river Irt with working waterwheel and millrace running through the heart of the building, the Sawmill cafe and farm shop is a great place to stop for mid-ride refreshments. Bike friendly outdoor seating. Open 6 days a week 9.30-4.30, closed Tuesdays.

Start at Holmrook Bridge - I started recording a few minutes late. Due to a change of mind on route plan I covered some road at King George PH twice - just turn left towards Hardknott.
