Die Tarpenbek hat hren Ursprung in Norderstedt, wo die Bäche Tarpenbek-Ost und Tarpenbek-West zusammenfließen. Am Ochsenzoll erreicht die Tarpenbek Hamburg-Langenhorn und fließt in Richtung Flughafen Hamburg, dessen Landebahnen sie beide unterquert. Danach erhält sie in Groß Borstel Zufluss durch die Kollau. Die Tarpenbek hat zwei Quellflüsse: Die Tarpenbek-Ost und die Tarpenbek-West. Diese fließen im Tarpenbek-Park in Norderstedt zusammen. Am Zusammenfluss steht eine Informationstafel. Überqueren kann man den Zusammenfluss über einer Brücke. Außerdem führt eine für Kinder gedachte Hängebrücke mit dem Namen Tampenbrücke über den Zusammenfluss. Im Tarpenbek-Park wird außerdem ein „Rundweg in der Tarpenbek-Niederung“ angeboten. Tampenbrücke über dem Zusammenfluss / dem Ursprung der Tarpenbek Die Tarpenbek-Ost entspringt westlich der Glasmoorstraße auf einem Privatgrundstück neben dem Stall Hoheneichen. Sie fließt vorwiegend durch landwirtschaftliche Nutzflächen, weshalb man selten an ihr entlanglaufen kann. Sie unterquert nur eine einzige öffentliche Fußgängerbrücke in der Nähe des Jägerlaufs. Sie unterquert die Poppenbütteler Straße, den Kreuzweg und die Schleswig-Holstein-Straße. In einem 1996 von der Stadt Hamburg veröffentlichen Dokument steht außerdem, dass die Tarpenbek-Ost den Nebenfluss „Ossenmoorgraben“ hat, allerdings ist vor Ort deutlich erkennbar, dass dieser Graben in die Gesamt-Tarpenbek mündet. Tatsächlich ist ein Moor vor Ort nicht erkennbar, vielmehr ähnelt die Gegend einem Teich. Außerdem ist die Tarpenbek-West schon ca. 100 Meter vor dem „Moor“ komplett ausgetrocknet. Laut Wikimedia Cloud Services sowie Google Maps, wo die Tarpenbek-West allerdings nicht benannt ist, kommt die Tarpenbek-West noch von deutlich weiter weiter weg her, nämlich aus einem Rückhaltebecken südlich vom Moorweg, in der Nähe des Norderstedter Stadtparkes.
