1월 7, 2023, View of Schloss Drachenburg

A little below the Plateau you will pass this vantage point of Drachenburg Castle on the way. The view of the (almost kitschy) castle with the Rhine and the Bonn skyline in the background is great. Photos from the small platform almost automatically have postcard quality.

"In a document dated February 27, 1222, Dietrich von Dorndorf - a descendant of the House of Wied - calls himself 'von Rosenouwe' for the first time. He was probably a follower of the Archbishop of Cologne. Because his castle fitted remarkably well into the castle system that protected the southern flank of the archbishopric with Rolandseck, Godesburg, Drachenfels and Wolkenburg. In a contract dated November 1243, Agnes, Dietrich von Rosenau's widow, sold the castle to the Heisterbach monastery. He was expressly granted the right to destroy the castle. After a second sales contract was concluded in 1249 because a daughter-in-law of Agnes von Rosenau had objected, the castle was destroyed around 1250 at the behest of the Heisterbach monastery. The remains were secured in 1990/91 with the help of IG mining and energy, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Königswinter.”

Drachenburg Castle is a castle on the Drachenfels in Koenigswinter. It was built in record time from 1882 to 1884 in the style of historicism (especially neo-early gothic on the exterior and neo-renaissance in the interior) as a representative residence for Stephan von Sarter, who, however, never lived in the castle. After his death, the castle was subjected to several changes in use.

"...Anyone who would like to visit a fairytale castle in NRW should go to Königswinter in the Siebengebirge. Here the Drachenburg Castle is enthroned high up on the Drachenfels...." You can find more information about this at: https://www.netreisetagebuch.de/schloss-drachenburg

"... Linz, the 'colorful city' opposite the mouth of the Ahr, is one of the most visited cities on the Rhine. The visitor will find many well-preserved old streets with old half-timbered houses in which numerous restaurants invite you to linger. The colorful, often richly decorated half-timbered buildings with numerous gables and different construction features brought Linz the name 'Colorful City'. They were built around the year 1500. Many were added after the Thirty Years' War and some as late as the 20th century. Until 1853, the Mühlenbach ran openly through the city. Today its underground course is indicated by the white cobblestones. The statue on the butter market is representative of all market women and reminds of the market woman Agnes, who, like many farmers from 1642 to the Second World War, came here on foot from a distance of up to 20 km to sell their goods. ..." http://www.rheintourist.de/staedte/linz/linz.php https://www.linz.de/

Rosenau Castle was probably built before 1200 as part of the Cologne rule. The lords of the castle of Rosenau (Rosowe / Rosenouwe, formerly von Dorndorf) belonged to the ministry of the archbishops of Cologne. Today there are still remnants of the up to 6 meters high ring wall with trachyte blocks. In 1990/91 conservation measures took place on the north wall (reconstruction of the entrance situation) as well as archaeological investigations, which allow the castle to be dated to the end of the 12th to the second half of the 13th century. In November 1243 the Cistercian Abbey of Heisterbach bought Rosenau Castle, one of the most important acquisitions of the monastery in the 13th century. In addition to 48 acres of forest and estates on Burgberg and in Königswinter, further lands and cultivated land (fields and viticulture) were part of the acquired growth of the monastery. As already assured in the purchase contract, the castle, which has been in ruins since then, was demolished around 1250. Source: Rhineland Regional Council

Very beautiful castle, with a neatly landscaped garden. For 7 euros per person you are already inside and you can quietly explore the castle for a few hours. At the top of the towers you have a great view over the Rhine and you can see for miles. In the castle itself you can view the impressive rooms and take nice photos! OPENING HOURS From the end of March to the beginning of November daily from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm

Ruins of Rosenau Castle. Not much has been preserved, but since the castle was destroyed again in 1250, the remains are remarkable after almost 800 years.

The highlight marks Rosenau. From here you have a view of Königswinter. The history of Rosenau Castle shows once again how powerful the clergy used to be. Very nice place to rest.
