In contrast to the remaining holes from the gypsum mining era, the Faulen Luch or Faulen See is a natural lake formed during the Ice Age. Due to gypsum mining, the groundwater level dropped, and a promontory emerged, which is still visible today.

The entire Blankensee is under nature protection. The plank bridge is the only part of the 280-hectare lake that is in contact with civilization. The Blankensee is surrounded by an intact reed belt, several hundred meters wide in places, and represents a valuable biotope. Great crested grebes and other rarer seabirds can also be observed from the much sought-after benches on the Bohlensteg. Or just eat a snack before you continue hiking in the Glau mountains...

Natural treasures

Sudermannpark is also often referred to as Blankensee Castle Park. In the center of the 3.5 hectare park is the castle, in which the writer Hermann Sudermann lived from 1902. The building, which was built in the style of the Brandenburg Baroque, was previously owned by his friend Victor von Thümen, whose family had the property built. The park was laid out in the middle of the 19th century by Peter-Joseph Lenné, who had made a name for himself as General Garden Director of the Royal Prussian Gardens. Sudermann's main focus was on redesigning the park into several thematically and formally self-contained garden spaces, the sculptures of which are impressive from his Italian collection. During a walk through the park, the visitor sees marble benches, the Italian statues, small white bridges that curve across the Nieplitz river and round temples. Everything together creates a Mediterranean atmosphere on Brandenburg soil.
