9월 23, 2025, Steinburg Castle Ruins
The Steinburg near Nannendorp – today Franzdorf – and Linau Castle were already mentioned in 1291 as the seat of the Scharpenberg Knights, who are notorious in Lauenburg's history for their numerous knightly feuds. In 1349, the Lübeckers attacked the Scharpenberg "robber barons" and, within 10 days, conquered and destroyed eight knights' castles in Lauenburg, including the Steinburg.

Here in the forest northwest of Franzdorf lie the remains of a medieval castle. However, only the remains of the ramparts and ditches remain, as well as some debris from fieldstone walls or foundations. The complex has a diameter of around 40m and stands out clearly from the otherwise flat landscape. Interestingly, the castle ruins lie exactly on the district border, i.e. on the border of the former duchies of Holstein and Lauenburg. The castle also gives its name to the municipality of Steinburg, which was created in 1978 from the merger of Eichede, Mollhagen and Sprenge. Coming from the direction of Mollhagen or Sprenge, the forest path appears to end here. For experienced mountain bikers, however, it should not be a problem to overcome the ramparts and ditches and continue the path on the other side towards Franzdorf.

For over 430 years, Ahrensburg Castle has been one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Schleswig-Holstein. During this long period there were joys and sorrows for the castle residents, as well as phases of decline and economic hardship instead of wealth and splendor. The castle museum is impressive with evidence of a long history, from the Renaissance to historicism, and modernity is also represented. Today the castle is not only a museum of Schleswig-Holstein aristocratic culture and the landmark of the city of Ahrensburg, but also offers its visitors a variety of opportunities to discover it from completely different sides. https://www.schloss-ahrensburg.de/das-schloss/

Well - one of my photos shows what it looked like here years ago: At first glance only a few stones, but authentic! Today: A brand new ruin! who likes it......

Today we visited the reconstructed castle. The reconstruction probably only affects the old keep, which was built a few meters thick with field stones. We would not have expected the castle itself to be here, but it is worth a short detour. Times must have been quite dangerous here back then, since some old castle ruins such as Cecilieninsel and the other castle ruins next to Cecilieninsel are also there. Incidentally, the way to the farm dog was blocked off, which means that it is no longer possible to get there. Next to the castle there are some ponds where fish was/is bred. If you want to enjoy the view, you can eat in the pond restaurant. But I don't know if this is still open at all, since there was no card on the house.

Remains of the medieval count castle Arnesfelde. There is nothing left of the walls. But the layout of the old castle is understandable through the castle hill and ramparts.

Even if it cannot be seen on the map, you can connect the two paths. Walking every once in a while, I've already done it on my bike, but it takes strength to push the bike up the mountain.

11월 22, 2020, Medieval Castle Ruins of Kuddewörde
Kuddewörde, with the old Saxon name Kuthenworden, and Rotenbek were first mentioned in 1230 in the tithe register of the bishop in Ratzeburg. A keep of Duke Eric IV of Saxony-Lauenburg was destroyed in a dispute with the Hanseatic cities of Hamburg and Lübeck in 1420. Duke Johann IV of Saxony-Lauenburg founded a Wilhelmite monastery with a hospital in 1495. The Kuddewörde monastery existed until the Reformation, then until 1698 as a poor house. The buildings were demolished in 1780. The 15th century Kuddewörde Castle was demolished in 1585. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuddew%C3%B6rde

The castle complex is on the way to the Billequelle and is only a ruin. Unfortunately, the access had been closed for a long time due to extensive restorations and with it the way to the Billequelle - but now the way is currently free again. In the past, apart from the hill and a few stones, there was nothing to be seen of a castle - now attempts have been made to partially reconstruct the castle's round tower with large field stones. I am unable to judge whether this has really worked out well ... it now looks much too bright and new for an old castle - hopefully it will age a little over time. The only public path leads from the castle to the Billequelle. The small bridge there is still closed, but you can walk / push past it. The slab path that leads past the source ends in a dead end and back it leads over a private property, where a farm dog takes good care and "intruders" bark properly. So you have to go back past the old castle.

Linau Castle was a three-part medieval castle. On the middle hill, the main castle, there are remains of a round tower with 3 m thick walls. A castle "Linowe" was first mentioned in 1291. At that time the complex, known as the "robbers' nest", was owned by the aristocratic Scharffenberg family and was destroyed. Possibly it was the "Schlossberg" near Linau-Oberteich. After the rebuilding here at this point (1308) the Scharffenbergs left the castle in 1345, but recaptured it in 1346 and feuded the land again. Through an alliance of the Duke of Lauenburg, the Counts of Holstein and Schauenburg as well as Hamburg and Lübeck, they were finally expelled in 1349 after a three-week siege.

Pretty castle that shines for a long time with the white facade. From outside the moat there are only two places where you can see the castle well. If you want to see it from close up, take the path over the bridge.

Arnesvelde Castle was a multi-part complex on a headland in the Hagen forest on the east side of the Hopfenbach valley. It was built on the edge of the Ahrensfeld pond, which was silted up today, with the oval castle hill with the main castle laid out like an island. On the west side there was a ramp towards the Ahrensfeld pond, the exact function of which is unknown. The main castle was probably connected to the bank by a bridge. An outer moat with a moat was built on the bank side around the castle hill. The area between the outer rampart and the main castle was probably undeveloped and was probably used for military purposes. In the outer wall, which was presumably fastened with a palisade, there was a gate on the east side. Only later was a fortress or inner wall 80 meters in diameter east of the main castle and another hill north of the castle hill, on which there was probably a tower hill castle (moth). The outer bailey also had a gate on the east side and was probably fortified with a palisade. Erratic boulders may have been used only sporadically; the use of bricks in Arnesvelde Castle has been documented by surface finds, but cannot be classified due to the lack of excavations. For fortifications in the region, bricks are also only documented in the Danewerk for 1160. For (later) above-ground buildings such. B. No reliable information is possible for commercial buildings. Today the earth walls of the 6 hectare facility can still be seen. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Arnesvelde

In the Billetal near Kuddewörde there are remains of a medieval castle ruin. Unfortunately, these are behind a paddock and are not accessible. But to imagine that there was medieval life on the small river is exciting.
