Further spectacular views of Burghausen's historic center can be enjoyed from the viewing platform, a short walk further upstream (with a kiosk and restrooms). Photographers will find the perfect setting here for their ideal shot: the 6 x 6 m "Castle Window" by local artist Stefan Esterbauer. After a short walk back, the Schmallerl-Steig path leads back down to the "Old Bridge".

In front of the Simbach Inn Bridge, the Inn god Aenus, a modern bronze sculpture by the sculptor Dominik Dengl, greets passers-by today - at least those who come from the Bavarian side. Aenus is sticking his backside out towards the Austrians, which earned the artist Dengl some criticism when it was installed in 2008. In the meantime, the waves have calmed down. What only a few people know: a representative bridge portal stood at this spot until 1945. The old bridge was built from granite between 1892 and 1894 and had a five-arched iron structure as the superstructure. In 1260, the first bridge over the Inn was built on the orders of Duke Henry XIII. This wooden bridge was repeatedly destroyed in the following centuries by floods, gusts of wind, wars and fires. After the ice blast in January 1880 had torn away part of the wooden bridge that connected Braunau with Simbach, a steel truss bridge on brick pillars and abutments was built jointly by the Austrian and Bavarian governments between 1892 and 1894. This bridge was blown up at the end of the war in 1945. It was not until 1950 that the new bridge was built jointly by the Austrian and Bavarian governments through the Linz-based "VOEST". It is a so-called "deck bridge", i.e. the roadway is installed above the supporting structure so that there is a clear view in all directions.
