Altenberg Castle was built around the year 1000 by a noble family and is one of the oldest castles in the Basel area. After a fire around 1050, it was rebuilt, but abandoned again before 1100. Archaeological excavations have provided important insights into early castle construction.

The canton of Aargau now runs a special needs school in the former Cistercian convent. Children and young people who are unable to attend public schools due to learning and behavioral difficulties are cared for and supported there.

The observation tower on Schleifenberg is 30 meters high. Those who manage to climb to the top (after paying the entrance fee) enjoy a magnificent view of the Liestal valley and far beyond. At the foot of the tower lies the Turmwirtschaft (Tower Inn). Its hosts are around ten groups of innkeepers who bring the inn to life every Sunday and public holiday throughout the year. They cook and serve for their guests out of sheer joy in working together.

Ideal starting point for hikes on the ridge towards the southeast, Sissach Gelterkinden, and northwest, Pratteln Augst and to the observation tower.

Above Arisdorf lies the "Hausi-Hof," a farm with extensive livestock and lush orchards. Directly at the bend in the path next to the long barn, the attentive hiker is treated to a view between two worlds. On the one hand, there is the lovely green and white-dotted hilly landscape (April cherry blossom season) surrounding Arisdorf, and on the other, the mechanized scenery of Basel, dominated by high-rise buildings and chemical factories. It is an impressive and stirring experience to see these two worlds so close together: heaven and hell. nature and humanity. future and past.

The former Cistercian monastery "Hortus Dei" (Garden of God), now known for short as "Olsberg Abbey," is the oldest women's monastery of this order in Switzerland and aptly bears its name. The monastery nestles comfortably in the green hills of the small village of "Olsberg." Today, the canton of Aargau uses the monastery as a special needs school. It provides care and support to children and young people who cannot attend public schools due to learning and behavioral difficulties. The monastery's charm is particularly evident from its elevated location. Especially during the cherry blossom season in early/mid-April, when the cherry trees wear their white wedding dress, the former monastery is a real eye-catcher. Please note!
