Absolute natural highlight in the middle of the biosphere reserve core zone and the Gangolfsberg nature reserve. To protect nature, mountain biking in the core zone and the nature reserve is only permitted on marked MTB/cycle paths. Unfortunately, mountain biking is not allowed on the paths to the basalt prism wall and the neighboring Teufelskeller. Please stick to it out of consideration for hikers and nature! - Rhön biosphere reserve

“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what prompted people to erect “their” cross at this point. (...) These wayside crosses were erected as visible signs and attract the attention of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and wants to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who has overcome death (...). The cross is part of our life as it was in the life of Jesus. So I wish that many people … visit the crosses, whether as places of stillness and breathing space before God, whether as places for community gatherings, prayer and praise to God.” (Text source: Dean Rainald M. Ollig in: "Crossroads... small sacred monuments as a sign of popular piety")

It is really worth going up the tower here. While there is hardly a view from the restaurant area, that from the 21.5m high tower from the 1960s is completely different: the wide all-round view right up to the Gr. Inselsberg in the Thuringian Forest, to Heidelstein, the Gleichbergen and much more.

The Rhön is known for its basalt formations. Even the basalt columns standing vertically in many places are impressive. Here they protrude horizontally towards the hiker - they literally "jump" at you. Absolutely fascinating.

From the Kreuzberg there are good views: From its northern slope there is a view of the Black Mountains, the Dammersfeldkuppe (second highest mountain in the Rhön; with restricted area of the Wildflecken military training area), the upper Sinntal, the Wasserkuppe, the Langen Rhön, the Thuringian Forest and the Brendtal . When visibility is very good, the Taunus with the Großer Feldberg can be seen in the west. Then there is an impressive view of the southern foreland of the Hohe Rhön and all the way to Schweinfurt (Wiki) from the Blockmeer located east to south-east below the summit plateau.

The Gangolf Chapel, the Teufelskeller and the prism wall are most beautiful to walk on via nature trails, the nature trail is really fun and isn't too crowded like the normal hiking trail to the sights.

The crucifixion group on the Kreuzberg is probably the most popular motif of the Rhön. A way of the cross with 13 picture chapels (1710) leads from the Kreuzberg monastery to the three stone Golgota crosses (1729). These represent the 12th station of the Way of the Cross, which is modeled on the Way of the Cross in Jerusalem. 🥾🥾

It is announced on the Internet that the inn will be open every day from June 7th, 21st (except Wednesday and Thursday closed). Also on several banners along the hiking trail it is propagated that it is open. Unfortunately we stood in front of a locked door. A sign said that it will probably only open on 06/11/21. A shame, especially if it says otherwise on their website. Nobody could be reached by phone either. Furthermore, it is advertised on the net with a lookout tower that is open all year round. That is also not true. The tower can only be visited when the inn is open.

There is a bench aligned with the basalt wall. Ideal for taking a break and in peace to marvel at the wall.
