It should read: "Schindergrube" (literally "skinning pit"). "Schinder" (often incorrectly spelled "schinter") usually refers to a knacker, a merciless superior, a tool, or a person who exploits others. It is an old word (since the 15th century) for bark peeler, tormentor, or animal carcass disposer.
