In the forest near the Heisenküche there is a forest nature trail and the remains of the Hameln Landwehr. The origin of the name Heisenküche has not been clearly clarified. Even before the forester's house was built, the location was marked on old maps as Heisenküche. The term could come from a so-called Hessen kitchen from the time of the Thirty Years' War. More likely is a derivation of the term rabbit kitchen mentioned in old documents, which means a place where the rabbit runs into the fields. In 1794, the first district forester of the Ostertor district moved into the half-timbered building of the Heisen kitchen. The forester's house served to protect the northern border of the city forest of Hamelin. The Ostertor area was one of the three districts of the city forest with the Neutor area on the Wehl and the Brückentor area on the Finkenborn on the Klüt. In the past, stables for cattle also belonged to the forester's lodge, since the forester held the right to graze in the forest in his area. Great view over Springe and the surrounding area

As of May 2021: The view over the foreland to well beyond Springe has been cut. The forecourt of the refuge is again a worthwhile destination for all those who are sad ;-)

On the Lauensteiner Kopf, at the highest point of the Ith (439 meters), the stone Ith Tower rises up and offers a breathtaking panoramic view in good weather. The tower is freely accessible and there are several picnic tables and a shelter around it for protection from the weather.

After the trees have been felled to the south, the view over Springe and Süntel to Hameln is free again.
