The present church stands where the monastery once stood. Friedrich von Sparneck, the monastery's founder, was buried here as early as 1477. The church at Sparneck was not very large and probably had a wooden tower on the roof. It only attained its present dimensions in 1695. The old monastery church now forms the choir of the enlarged church. A devastating fire largely destroyed the church on May 5, 1845. Reconstruction dragged on until 1861 and gave the church its present neo-Gothic appearance.

Beautiful Margrave Church. There are free parking spaces opposite. The Jean-Paul Trail passes by, as do local circular hiking trails.

The church was probably built between 1470 and 1500. Several wall paintings inside the church and the tower with the dates 1479 and 1483 prove this. Source Wikipedia

From mid-April to Christmas, the church is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you find yourself in front of a locked door in the morning during these months, let us know politely (!) in the village shop and if you don't demand that people drop everything to open it for you IMMEDIATELY, the church will also be opened to you. Sometimes it takes a few moments. There is an opportunity for silent prayer here. The church is beautiful. In summer it is wonderfully cool, and there is also a stamp from the pilgrimage cycle path. There isn't often anyone in the rectory next door. The advice to ring the bell there dates back to times when every village had a priest...
