Rhine Floodplain near Hersel Within the Bornheim city limits, the Rhine is largely bordered by the steep banks of the lower terrace. Only south of Hersel does this escarpment recede, creating a large floodplain. This area is a protected landscape and a popular recreational area. Numerous pedestrians, with and without dogs, joggers, and cyclists frequent the towpath along the Rhine and the "Auenweg" (floodplain path), which runs parallel to it through the middle of the floodplain. Until a few years ago, the floodplain was primarily used for agriculture. Since then, the city has purchased many plots of land between Auenweg and the towpath using compensation funds for interventions in nature and the landscape, in order to develop a typical floodplain landscape. To this end, some trees have been planted, and the area has been fenced so that it can be grazed by sheep and goats.
