The canal was built between 1960 and 1992. It created a continuous large shipping route (called the European Canal) between the North Sea near Rotterdam and the Black Sea near Constanța (Romania), which runs over the Rhine, Main and Danube. This is why the canal is also known as the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal (RMD Canal). At the time of planning and construction, the name Rhine-Main-Danube large shipping route was also common.[4] Regionally, it is often simply called the New Canal to distinguish it from its predecessor, the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal. The 17-kilometer-long summit section, which crosses the Franconian Alb low mountain range as the European main watershed Rhine-Danube, is the highest point of the European waterway network at 406 m above sea level. The RMD Canal is steadily losing importance as a freight transport route (especially for container transport), but it is increasingly becoming an attraction for tourists and river cruises.[5][6] Together with the Franconian Lake District, the canal channel is also part of the Danube-Main transfer, which supplies the Regnitz and Main system, which is threatened by temporary drought, with water from the Danube and Altmühl.

The Rhine-Main-Danube Canal cuts through the municipality in the west. South of the RH 1 county road you can see the Leerstetten lock, which, with a lifting height of 24.67 meters, is one of the largest locks in Europe.

The lock has its own command post, but has been remotely operated from the WSV district headquarters in Hilpoltstein since 2007. The Bachhausen, Eckersmühlen and Hilpoltstein locks are also remotely controlled from there. From 2024, twelve locks will be controlled from the Nuremberg control center, and later all 16 canal locks.[6] The lock is operational around the clock all year round and is illuminated at night, except in the event of operational disruptions such as accidents, maintenance work or ice. In the upper and lower water there are lock harbors for commercial shipping, waiting areas with telephone stations for recreational shipping and slipways for small vehicles. Small vehicles are only handled during the day and usually together with large ships. Human-powered watercraft are not allowed to enter the lock; A transport trolley with a deposit is available at the slip points for them to be moved by hand. Source: Wikipedia
